The Mealy Amazon (Amazona farinosa)
The Gentle Giant of the Amazon
The Mealy Amazon is one of the largest and most laid-back members of the Amazon family. While many of its relatives are famous for being “feisty” or high-strung, the Mealy is widely known as the “Gentle Giant.” Its name comes from the powdery, “mealy” appearance of its nape and back, which looks as though the bird has been lightly dusted with flour.
Native to a massive range across Central and South America, they are birds of the deep humid rainforest. In the wild, they are often seen in pairs or large, noisy flocks, frequently socializing with other species like Macaws at clay licks.
Key Characteristics
-
The “Floury” Plumage: Their scientific name, farinosa (from the Latin for “floury”), refers to the dull, matte-green feathers on their neck and back that have a distinct powdery texture.
-
Large and Robust: Measuring up to 16 inches, they are among the biggest parrots in the Amazona genus, surpassed only by the Imperial Amazon.
-
The Lavender Crown: Many individuals feature a soft wash of blue or lavender on the crown, occasionally tipped with a few yellow feathers.
-
Gentle Disposition: While still capable of being boisterous, Mealies are generally more predictable and easy-going than the “hot-three” (Yellow-naped, Double Yellow-head, and Blue-front).

Subspecies Note
Recent taxonomic updates often split the Mealy Amazon into two distinct species:
-
Southern Mealy Amazon (A. farinosa): Found throughout the Amazon basin.
-
Northern Mealy Amazon (A. guatemalae): Found from Mexico to Honduras, often called the “Blue-crowned Mealy” due to its more prominent blue forehead.
Care & Lifestyle Needs
Because of their size and temperament, Mealy Amazons have specific requirements:
-
The “Barking” Call: Don’t let their calm nature fool you—when excited, their natural call can sound like a loud, rhythmic bark or a braying donkey. They are not suitable for apartments.
-
Water Lovers: Most Mealies are obsessed with water. They love to soak themselves in a shallow dish or join their owners for a “shower” to keep their powdery feathers healthy.
-
Space to Move: Due to their large wing-load and size, they need a massive cage or a dedicated flight area. They are prone to obesity, so daily exercise is a must.
-
The “Nape” Flare: When a Mealy is excited, it can raise the feathers on its nape almost like a mane, a unique visual cue to their mood.
Is a Mealy Amazon Right for You?
The Mealy is the perfect choice for someone who wants the presence and intelligence of a large parrot but prefers a bird that is generally more stable and affectionate. If you have the space for a large aviary and don’t mind the occasional loud “bark,” you will find the Mealy to be one of the most rewarding companions in the avian world.
