The Jenday Conure (or Jandaya Parakeet) is a stunningly vibrant parrot native to the wooded habitats of northeastern Brazil. Often mistaken for its cousin, the Sun Conure, the Jenday is a distinct species known for its bold colors and equally bold personality.

They are the “small macaws” of the conure world—possessing a giant spirit, high intelligence, and an incredibly affectionate nature that makes them beloved by parrot enthusiasts worldwide.

Key Characteristics

• The “Full” Golden Head: Unlike the Sun Conure (which has yellow mixed with green on the wings), the Jenday has a solid, brilliant yellow head, neck, and chest that transitions into a fiery orange around the eyes and abdomen.

• Green Wings: The most reliable way to tell a Jenday apart from a Sun Conure is the wings. Jendays maintain solid forest-green wings and back throughout their entire lives, whereas adult Sun Conures turn almost entirely yellow.

• Vibrant Blue Accents: When they fly, they reveal beautiful blue primary feathers and a multi-colored tail of green, blue, and maroon.

• Hardy Build: They are slightly stockier and more robust than the Green-cheeked Conure, with a powerful beak that loves to stay busy.

• The “Velcro” Factor: Jendays are famous for their desire to be on you at all times. They love to snuggle under your chin, hide in your shirt, or ride on your shoulder as you go about your day.

• Vocal Expression: Be warned: Jendays are loud. They have a piercing, high-pitched shriek that they use to express everything from excitement to boredom. They are generally not suitable for apartments or those sensitive to noise.

• Extreme Intelligence: They are highly trainable and can learn tricks like “fetch,” “wave,” and “basketball” very quickly. While not the best talkers, they can learn several phrases with a charming, raspy voice.

• The “Chew” Instinct: They have a high need to destroy things. If you don’t provide a steady supply of bird-safe wood, cardboard, and shreddable toys, they will likely find your furniture or cabinets to be a suitable substitute.
