The Harlequin Macaw is a magnificent first-generation (F1) hybrid, the result of crossing a Blue and Gold Macaw with a Green-winged Macaw. By combining the legendary “Gentle Giant” personality of the Green-wing with the playful, social intelligence of the Blue and Gold, the Harlequin stands out as one of the most well-rounded and visually spectacular parrots in the world.

Because they inherit traits from two different large species, Harlequins are famous for their unique “neon” coloring and their massive, impressive presence.

• Vibrant Neon Plumage: Harlequins typically display a stunning orange-red chest (a blend of the Blue and Gold’s yellow and the Green-wing’s red) and iridescent wings that transition from deep green to royal blue.

To keep a Harlequin Macaw thriving, you must provide an environment that supports its large size and active mind:

• Substantial Living Space: Due to their massive size, they require a very large, heavy-duty enclosure or a bird-safe room where they can fully extend their wings.

• Heavy-Duty Enrichment: Harlequins are powerful chewers. They need a consistent supply of large wood blocks, thick ropes, and stainless steel foraging toys to keep their beaks and minds occupied.

• Dietary Requirements: Like their parent species, they require a diet rich in healthy fats and proteins. High-quality pellets should be supplemented with large nuts (macadamias, walnuts, and pecans) and a daily “chop” of fresh vegetables and fruits.
