The Peach-fronted Conure (Eupsittula aurea)
The Sunny Soul of the Savannah
The Peach-fronted Conure is a bright, cheerful parrot native to the open woodlands and savannahs of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Often confused with the Half-moon Conure, the Peach-fronted is slightly more common and is prized for its hardy nature and sunny disposition.
While they are closely related to the “loud” Aratinga species, they are generally much more laid back, making them a popular choice for those who want a colorful bird without the constant noise.
Key Characteristics
-
The Golden Brow: Their most striking feature is the vibrant orange-peach patch on the forehead, just above the beak.
-
The “Grey” Crown: Directly behind the peach forehead is a beautiful wash of dusty blue-grey that covers the crown of the head.
-
Black Beak: Unlike the Half-moon (which has a horn-colored beak), the Peach-fronted has a solid black beak, which is a key way to tell the two species apart.
-
Golden Eyes: They have rich, orange-yellow irises surrounded by a pale, bare eye-ring, giving them an intense and focused expression.
-
Green Splendor: Their body is a lush, grass-green, with subtle olive tones on the chest and a flash of blue on the flight feathers.

Care & Personality
The Peach-fronted is often described as a “middle-ground” conure—bigger than a Green-cheek, but not as demanding as a Macaw.
-
Affectionate & Docile: They are known for being very “sweet.” While every bird is an individual, Peach-fronted conures are often less “nippy” than Green-cheeks and more willing to be handled by multiple family members.
-
The “Busy” Bird: They are incredibly inquisitive. They will spend hours investigating a new toy or trying to figure out how to open a cage latch. They need plenty of “intellectual” toys and foraging puzzles.
-
Vocal Abilities: They aren’t the best talkers, but they are excellent at learning whistles and household sounds (like a microwave beep or a telephone). Their natural call is a series of cheerful chirps and the occasional sharp shriek when they are excited.
-
Love for the Floor: In the wild, they often forage on the ground for seeds and fallen fruit. In captivity, they love to explore the floor (under supervision!) and play with foot toys.
Dietary Needs
To keep their “peach” forehead vibrant, they need a diet high in natural pigments:
-
Vitamin A: Focus on orange and dark green veggies—squash, carrots, and kale are favorites.
-
Hydration: They love juicy fruits. Providing fresh slices of apple, pear, and melon helps keep them hydrated and happy.
Is a Peach-fronted Conure Right for You?
This bird is an excellent “starter” conure for someone who has the time to provide daily interaction. They are hardy, beautiful, and possess a very “even” temperament. If you want a bird that is playful but doesn’t necessarily need to be the center of attention every second of the day, the Peach-fronted is a wonderful choice.
