Description

The Cherry-headed Conure (Psittacara erythrogenys)

The Red-Masked Acrobat

The Cherry-headed Conure, also known as the Red-masked Parakeet, is one of the most vibrant and recognizable members of the conure family. Native to the dry forests and jungles of Ecuador and Peru, these birds are famous not just for their striking colors, but for their status as a “celebrity” bird—most notably featured in the book and documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

They are the “energy centers” of the parrot world—highly intelligent, extremely loud, and incredibly playful.

Key Characteristics

  • The Crimson Mask: Their most famous feature is the deep, “cherry-red” feathers that cover the entire face, extending back past the eyes and onto the crown.

  • Red “Stockings”: Beyond their face, they have distinctive red patches on the “shoulders” (bends of the wings) and red feathers on their thighs, giving them a colorful, sporty look.

  • Large and Powerful: They are one of the larger conure species, with a robust body and a very powerful, bone-colored beak designed for cracking tough nuts.

  • Expressive Eye-Rings: They have a prominent, bare white ring of skin around their eyes that makes their expressions seem almost human.

Care & Personality

The Cherry-headed Conure is a “big” bird in a medium-sized body. They require a confident owner who can handle their high-octane personality:

  • The “Class Clown”: They love to perform. Whether it’s hanging upside down by one toe, dancing to music, or wrestling with a toy, they live to be the center of attention.

  • Vocal Strength: This is not a bird for apartments or noise-sensitive neighbors. Their natural call is a series of loud, metallic shrieks that can carry for blocks. However, they are talented mimics and can learn a significant vocabulary.

  • Beak Power: They have a strong instinct to chew. They need a constant supply of “destructive” toys—untreated wood, leather, and heavy-duty bird toys—to prevent them from chewing on your woodwork or furniture.

  • Social Bonding: They are “velcro” birds that form intense bonds with their owners. If they feel neglected, they aren’t afraid to let you know with a very loud protest.

Is a Cherry-headed Conure Right for You?

This bird is perfect for someone who wants a high-energy, interactive companion and has a house (not an apartment) where noise isn’t an issue. If you can match their enthusiasm and provide plenty of mental stimulation, the Cherry-headed Conure will reward you with decades of laughter and loyalty.
