Description

The Festive Amazon (Amazona festiva)

The Red-Backed River Dweller

The Festive Amazon, also known as the Festive Parrot, is a unique and specialized species of Amazon parrot native to the humid lowlands and river basins of South America. It is most famous for being one of the only Amazon species to feature a brilliant red rump and lower back, a field mark that is usually hidden while perched but flashes dramatically during flight.

There are two distinct subspecies: the Southern Festive Amazon (A. f. festiva) from the Amazon River basin, and the Bodin’s Amazon (A. f. bodini) from the Orinoco River basin.

Key Characteristics

  • The “Hidden” Crimson: While their body is a deep forest green, they possess a large patch of scarlet-red on the lower back and rump. This feature is nearly invisible when the bird is at rest but acts as a vibrant “beacon” in the air.

  • Aquatic Specialist: Unlike many Amazons that prefer highland forests, the Festive Amazon is rarely found far from water. They thrive in Várzea (flooded) forests, river islands, and coastal mangroves.

  • Subtle Facial Patterns: The nominate species (A. f. festiva) has a narrow dark-red line across the forehead and a soft blue wash above the eyes and on the chin.

  • Calmer Temperament: They are generally noted for having a steadier and more tranquil disposition than the “hot-three” (Blue-fronted, Yellow-naped, and Double Yellow-headed) Amazons.

Care & Environmental Needs

Because of their specific origins, Festive Amazons have unique requirements:

  • A Love for Water: Due to their river-based heritage, they are enthusiastic bathers. They require daily misting or access to a shallow dish to maintain their plumage and respiratory health.

  • Wood & Shredding: They are “heavy chewers” by nature. Providing a steady supply of fresh, non-toxic branches (like willow or fruit wood) is essential to keep their beaks busy and prevent furniture damage.

  • Social Complexity: They are highly social and often seen in small flocks. In a home, they view their human family as their flock and require regular daily interaction to stay mentally healthy.

Is a Festive Amazon Right for You?

The Festive Amazon is an excellent choice for an owner who appreciates a bird with a unique look and a slightly more “mellow” Amazon personality. While they can still be loud (especially at dawn), their social and inquisitive nature makes them delightful companions for those who live near the water or simply love the “river-parrots.”
