The Goffin’s Cockatoo, also known as the Tanimbar Corella, is the smallest of the white cockatoos, but don’t let their size fool you. They are widely considered one of the most mechanically gifted and “engineer-brained” parrots in existence. In scientific studies, Goffin’s have famously demonstrated the ability to solve complex multi-step locks and even create their own tools to reach food.

Key Characteristics

• Master Escape Artists: They are notorious for figuring out how to open cage latches. If there is a way to unscrew, unbolt, or slide a lock, a Goffin’s will find it.

• Subtle Beauty: They are primarily white with soft salmon-pink or peach-colored feathers between the beak and the eye (the lores). The underside of their wings and tail also has a delicate yellowish wash.

• The “Busy” Personality: Goffin’s are high-velocity birds. They are constantly moving, dancing, tossing toys, and exploring. They require a lot of “work” to keep their minds satisfied.

• Affectionate but Play-Oriented: While they enjoy a good cuddle, they are often more interested in playing with you than just sitting still. They love to be the center of attention and will perform “clownish” antics to get a laugh.

Because of their high intelligence and energy levels, Goffin’s require a very specific environment:

• Mechanical Enrichment: They need puzzles. Bolt-and-nut toys, foraging boxes, and “disassemble-able” toys are mandatory to prevent boredom-based behaviors like feather plucking.

• Safe Exploration: Because they are so small and curious, they can get into trouble quickly. Supervised out-of-cage time is essential, but you must “bird-proof” your home as if you have a curious toddler.

• Social Interaction: They are very social and can become destructive if left alone for long periods. They thrive in homes where they are treated as an active participant in daily life.
